Affiliate programs are not really all that new. The concept was pioneered by amazon.com in its early days in the mid 1990s. By early 2001, amazon had over 500,000 affiliates! (Actually, amazon.com calls them "associates", but these days they seem to be more widely referred to as "affiliates", so I will use that term from here on in.)

The way affiliate programs work is actually amazingly simple and incredibly efficient. Let's use amazon.com as an example.

Affiliate Programs Are Free

Typically, a webmaster with Web site content that is complementary to the products that amazon.com sells (i.e. books, tapes, videos, CDs, etc.) would want to sign up as an amazon.com affiliate. There is no charge to join the affiliate program of amazon.com, or that of any other merchant.

It's All About Links

The amazon.com affiliates, are then provided with HTML hyperlinks to the amazon site, in the form of banners, buttons, or text links. They then install these hyperlinks on their own site in appropriate places, usually near complementary content, either text or graphics.

Once these links are set-up, when visitors to the affiliate site click on the amazon.com links, they are immediately taken to the amazon.com site where they can view the products for sale, and possibly make a purchase.

Affiliates Gets Commissions From Each Sale

Under the affiliate agreement with amazon.com, if that re-directed visitor buys something while at the amazon site, the affiliate is entitled to a percentage of the sale as commission, such as 5% or 10%. These percentages vary from merchant to merchant, and can range between 5% and 50% of a sale.

Andy Rooney's Tips for Handling Telemarketers

Three Little Words That Work!

(1)The three little words are: "Hold On, Please..."

Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt.

Then when you eventually hear the phone company's "beep-beep-beep" tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task. These three little words will help eliminate telephone soliciting.


(2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end?

This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone.

This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a "real" sales person to call back and get someone at home.

What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possible This confuses the machine that dialled the call and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer !!!

(3) Junk Mail Help:

When you get "ads" enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these "ads" with your payment. Let the sending companies throw their own junk mail away.

When you get those "pre-approved" letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the return envelope.

Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right? It costs them more than the regular 37 cents postage "IF" and when they receive them back.

It costs them nothing if you throw them away! The postage was around 50 cents before the last increase and it is according to the weight. In that case, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little, postage-paid return envelopes.

One of Andy Rooney's (60 minutes) ideas:

Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express. Send a pizza coupon to Citibank. If you didn't get anything else that day, then just send them their blank application back!

If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't on anything you send them.

You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing! It still costs them 37 cents.

The banks and credit card companies are currently getting a lot of their own junk back in the mail, but folks, we need to OVERWHELM them. Let's let them know what it's like to get lots of junk mail, and best of all they're paying for it...Twice!

Let's help keep our postal service busy since they are saying that e-mail is cutting into their business profits, and that's why they need to increase postage costs again. You get the idea !

If enough people follow these tips, it will work ---- I have been doing this for years, and I get very little junk mail anymore.

Have you heard of Associated Content? On the front page of their website they say that anyone can become a published writer and get paid for it. Even you! This is really a super way to use the internet as a money making engine for you, including an addition to your multiple stream of income list. Do you know how to become a content producer? I bet you do and you didn't even know it.

First of all, one thing to keep in mind is that content can be submitted to Associated Content in many forms:

* And images

Associated Content will then review your article and email you once it has been accepted along with a monetary value that they will pay you for said article. It could be anywhere from $4 - $10 or more, depending on how well it was written, subject matter and other factors.

I recently submitted an article that I really felt would not get accepted simply because it was what I considered very basic, and although very informative, would only be interesting to a few people. Well, low and behold, it was accepted and I was paid $4. Remember that I had actually written it for nothing to begin with, so now I am $4 richer. :-)

Now you may say that $4 is a very small amount of money if you are talking about getting paid on the Internet, but this could be just the beginning of your writing career and you may not have even planned on getting paid to write in the first place.

On top of that, as you continue to submit articles to Associated Content, you should see a rise in the payments offered to you for your submissions.

It took almost three weeks for me to see a credit for Complete Home, but I did finally get it. I had no problems with credits for the others. On the other hand, I did sign up for some freebies that I did not get credit for.

I later came to understand that the reason for this was because the company offering the surveys was the same, just different surveys. Well, if you are not a "unique" visitor to their site, meaning a unique IP address, I believe, then they will consider you a repeat visitor and will not give you more than one credit. So keep that in mind when you are signing up for freebies.

Another thought that I wanted to share with you again is that you have to be very careful and read the TOS for the products or services that require cancellation if you do not intend to continue with the company. For example, some companies require cancellation within 24 hours. Also, some require that after you try out their products, if you don't like them, you send the product back on your dollar for Shipping and Handling. You still make a pretty good profit, but just remember that.

This month I signed up for Dr. Laura Berman's Passion Prescription, a freebie where you are not required to give credit card information at all. You just complete the survey and are given a prescription based on your answers. After that you are given an option of accepting further services offered. I did not accept those extra services, but that is not required to receive credit from Instant Profitz.

I have not received the promised $19.50 from Instant Profitz yet, but I understand it takes 4 weeks for this one to process. I will let you know how it goes.

It take some offers a while to process and others are credited instantly. I guess in some cases it's not really "instant" profits, is it - LOL.

If you have any questions about your accounts, the forum has a great administrator and some awesome moderators who in my experience are right on top of your questions the same day you ask them. Make sure not to forget to visit Instant Profitz's forum!!!

Blogitive - Get Paid to Write!

Are you a member of Blogitive?

This company is fairly new, considered to be in its beta stage, but they have promised on their homepage, some up and coming changes to their site where members can have more opportunities to be paid.

In the past, they would provide you with a link to a company that would like you to host their link on your page surrounded by a paragraph, preferably relevant to the link. In return you are paid $5 per link that you add to your blog. It is a super easy way to earn a quick $5 or more depending on how many offers you accept.

You can also earn by referring others to the site, having them sign up and become approved. The referral system is manual, but you are suppose to get $5 for every member you sign up. There is a system you as the sign-up-ee have to follow in order to give the person you signed up under credit.

Here are the directions directly from the site:

We will pay you $5.00 for every Blogger you refer to this program, they must qualify. It will become much easier for Blogs to qualify once we have other service offerings. Here are the instructions on how to get credit for this. Have the person you referred submit a comment in the contact us form. In the future we will create a more automated way to track referrals but we will do it this way for now.

Instant Profitz - Finding Out the Hard Way.

What I Didn't Know - What You Should Know!

Blog readers, if you are a part of Instant Profitz, know before hand that your decision to enjoy it is an excellent one! I have been enjoying being a member of Instant Profitz for close to two months now and don't feel I will be looking back. Instant Profitz is here to stay and so am I. They have recently completed a full year in business and what a superb start to their second year with a new referral program, more "get paid to sign up" offers and more!

After saying all of that, I would like to share with you my experience so that you can do things differently the first time around and not have to learn the hard way like I did.

There are some "free" offers where you are allowed to try out a product without having to make a payment for the "free" trial for a particular amout of time. In some of these instances, credit card information is still requested so that, in the event you decide to continue with the product or service, the company has all of your information up front sort of as a guaranty that you will be committed to either backing out before the trial is over or your account will be charged.

This hasn't posed a problem for me at all since, for the most part, I do try out the product/service, decide that I don't want to continue and cancel beforehand - no credit card charges to follow. Some of you may be using prepaid cards, which is even better.

Although if you are using these type of cards, still be sure to read the terms of service ("TOS") and privacy policies for each company you sign up with. They can be tricky. My suggestion is to just get yourself a little notebook or do an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of the offers you do and cancel dates if you intend to cancel.

Getting to the point of this blog entry, now here is where I had a problem and have had this problem during March as well. When I sign up for the free offers where they ask for a credit card (prepaid card), I am absolutely clear on what the cancellation date is. However, it seems I've been cancelling too early.

For example, a certain online service says that I have seven days to try out their service at which time I can either decide to cancel or I will be charged "x" amount of dollars. So I do try out the service, but within 24 hours I am absolutely certain it is not for me. Well, I go ahead and proceed with the cancellation process.

What happens is that Instant Profitz sometimes, not all the time, does not credit your account right away, so if I cancel "too" early and my account hasn't been credited, then I forfit the "profit." This is not because Instant Profitz has a rule or anything about this, but if I cancel too early, they will not get paid and therefore, will not be able to pay me.

I did not know this or notice it was because of cancelling too early that I wasn't getting credited until it happened to me a few times. At first I thought it had something to do with not clearing my cookies, which I also corrected (You must clear your cookies after each offer you do or you may have crediting issues - Just do it and you'll be fine. :-)). Anyway, what a bummer, because the items were big ticket items (for me anyway at $25 plus in some instances).

So what should you do with this information?

If you do come across a product or service where you are promised a reward from Instant Profitz for "signing up," especially for "free offers where a credit card is involved," and you do not get that reward, maybe it's because of what happened to me. Hold off on cancelling until you get the credit.

If you see that time is running out, don't wait until the absolute last minute to cancel, because in some instances it takes more than 24 hours for the cancellation process to take effect. If you still haven't received credit, just chalk it up to "Oh well, maybe next time."

FREEBIE offers are not as "guaranteed" for lack of a better word as the paid offers are, so there isn't any way to contest the fact that you signed up and didn't get paid for that offer. That is one reason why I like doing paid offers. I haven't had any problems with credits in March or this month when it came to PAID offers.

While you are having fun this month with all of those offers, remember my experience. That way you will still be able to get your INSTANT PROFITZ!

Multiple Streams of Income - The Key to Success!

Are you one who realizes that multiple streams of income is really the key to success with making money online? I have incorporated lots of pointers in this blog on how to gain multiple streams of income by survey taking, signing up and becoming active in "get paid to sign up" programs like Instant Profitz and Inbox Dollars. I have even shared what you can do with your blog entries by submitting them to companies who pay you (albeit minimally) for your writing. All of that income adds up, right!

In addition to that, let me suggest another stream of income you can take advantage of. You can become an internet marketer. Why do this? Is it easy? Does it take a full-time-job kind of time? Well, I have been discussing this in detail at Blogging - What's In It For Me? and decided it is also an appropriate subject to discuss here, so my plan is to share with you how you can become an internet marketer and show you how to earn your living and your freedom from your work-outside-of-the-home jobs!

Now, I am by no means an expert at this as I am in the process of learning how to become an internet marketer as well, but I am going to share this information with you, because I think it is the right thing to do. Everyone deserves to know how to become an internet marketing expert and that includes you. Remember, don't be afraid to learn something new. Knowledge is power!

Things That You Have Done To Make Money Online

In line with this Free Survey Lists & More theme, I am officially opening a Free Blog Carnival and the theme will be "Things You Have Done To Make Money On the Internet."

Here's how it works quoting from Gayla of the blog site, Work At Home Mom:

The whole idea behind a blog carnival is for a blogger to suggest a topic - they themself and other bloggers write about that topic and the one person in charge of the topic hosts outgoing links to all the other bloggers who are writing.

Now when a person suggests a topic - then you choose to write, you simply write what you want on your blog and link to the persons post that suggested it.

Finally in explanation, look at my friend Angela's blog as an example of how to do it: WAHM Netiquette.

Now the topic I have chosen again is - Things You Have Done To Make Money On The Internet - and all you have to do is write a post about this topic on your own blog, of course fitting it into the nature of your blog, and link to this blog as the "topic host?"

You may also make an entry by posting your "way of making money online" in the comment section of this post.

The only rule I would like you to follow is to make sure it is a family friendly post.

There are many ways to make money online, so what I would like your entry to include are the following:

1. Mention one program that you were involved in that made you money (this could include companies you affiliated with, your experience with Google Adsense, survey companies, products you have sold, stay at home companies like "Stayin At Home and Lovin It," etc.);
2. A little description of your particular program or company;
3. Was it successful for you and if so, why?; and
4. If not, then why didn't it work for you.

I will then return the link by posting your entries here. So I will start:

1. One of the things that I have done to make money online was/is taking Surveys. I have been very happy with a company called MySurvey.com. This company sends you survey invitations via email with a little description of what the survey entails and what you will receive in return for completing the survey. This usually consists of a number of points. Eventually the points add up to 1000 which doesn't really take long since you are sent many invitations within the month. Once you get your 1000 points, you can decide to cash it in for $10, exchange it for gift cards to places like Blockbuster, Amazon.com and other places, or you can just let it sit and accumualte until you reach another 1000. Every 1000 points equals $10. It has been a successful venture for me as I have been paid a number of times and who wouldn't be happy with that!

2. Charisse has taken advantage of a whole host of online opportunities. Here is an excerpt from her entry:

The first check I ever received from online money was about 7 years ago from Brief Me. Com. It was a site that paid you to write reviews about other sites. Little did I know that Brief Me would be the precursor to my Freelance Writing career. I also installed some browsers and began surfing for money, joined All Advantange, (which sent me quite a few checks) and even took on a job calling leads for a company that used “Dialpad”. I then began to earn some money with affiliate programs, and one that I promoted heavily with my Homesheart Homeschooling site was “mentura” they were a series of homeschooling and Christian DVDs (like Netflix but much more familiy oriented). I promoted them and earned a few hundred dollars until they became “Family Pass” and stopped their affiliate programming. (Wow, I hadn’t realized how many programs I have used…lol)

3. Ashley, blog owner of The Kid Within, has some great newbie experiences with blogging and Google Adsense and she's also involved in survey taking. Here's a snippet of her story:

I know a lot of people ahve been burned with get rich quick scams. I was lucky that I didn't loose any money in that. I only lost $10. I was very lucky to find this wonderful wedsite http://www.katieshugs.com. Well there the owner of the website has tons of free survey sites listed. I joined about 10 sites. I haven't made any money yet off of them But I've heard it takes time so I am hanging in there. The one company I get a lot of surveys from is NFO Mysurvey.com. This company you earn points on every survey and when you have 1000 points you can cash out for $10. I also started a blog recently. I heard you could make money that way. Granted I am very new at this and I don't know much at all. But I am leraning from Wahm.com and from my friend Connie. One program that every one raves about is Google Adsense. I've only made 1 cent with them so far. But I'm happy with that. I know these thigngs take time and since I'm so new at this it is taking me a while to learn how to get my blog out there and everything.

4. Susan, of Susan's Spa, shares some great experiences with making money online with her ebay business. She also tried selling used books online and is now into blogging. Here is her story:

I've done lots of things to make money at home from selling Avon, to Discovery Toys. I also sold "designer inspired" pocketbooks for a time, but because they were not the counterfeit bags that women really wanted, I ended up dissolving that business after a year. The most profitable at-home business I've had to date, is my ebay business. It's consistent, steady income and it is backed by a very supportive community. I've also sold used books on half.com, but I ended up getting rid of my inventory through garage sales since storing the used books proved to be quite a problem. Finally, I've made some money from blogging. This is really great because I get to do something I really enjoy like writing, while earning a small, but steady income.

5. Gayla, of the Work At Home Mom blog, has learned how to make over $1,500 monthly online and has done this consistently for the past year! She adds a very practical addition to our blog carnival and further confirmation that it can be done. Read more about her story on Affiliate Marketing Programs. I know I will be!

6. Kemi, of the Organizing the Home blog, says that she "fell into affiliate marketing" and says that she plays the piano and bought a book called the "Method Book" and that the book was so good that she decided to become an affiliate. Here's a quote from her story:

....Kind of as a fluke because I hardly had a site when I did it. I forgot all about it but then one day I got this email that I had made a sale. Isn't that a good feeling? They pay nicely and it was a nice surprise. Well the sales have been rolling in ever since....

7. LotionBarBunny (comment No. 3), of A Girl's Gotta Spa, says she has a "Bath and Body" business online along with participating in several affiliate marketing programs. Here's more of her comment:

I have made money in a variety of ways over the past year. The most profitable has been with my Country Bunny Bath & Body business. I haven't met anyone yet who doesn't use bath & body products, and as many people are becoming more and more health conscious, our products provide a great alternative to the mainstream (and overly chemical) market.

I also have started making money with my blog through affiliating with different ad programs, such as AdBrite, BlogAds, Google Adsense and Chitika eMini Malls. All provide the publisher with control over the ads, so I can be sure that the ads compliment the content on my blogs.

8. Mia, of Choose 2 Be Debt Free, says that she has tried so many things to make money online that she doesn't even know where to start to answer this blog carnival question. Here's her response:

I have tried so many things I don't really know where to start. My initial quest to financial freedom started with the autosurf craze. I joined one just to test the water. Less than a month later, after I had upgraded atlest twice, my autosurf shut down. I lost $20 and my desire to ever use an autosurf program again. From there I joined Stuff a Friend. It was a really cute concept and one that I would have to invest a lot of time into. I actually love their stuffable bears and dolls. This is still currently a work in progress. I have yet to make a profit on this one. I then went on and added online surveys to my many attempts at fortune. I have yet to receive a dime but from one site I have been able to test a few products which I thought was pretty cool. My next endeavor involved paid to click and paid to read sites. That lasted all of 1 hour. There was no way I was going to sit there and look at 20 emails worth only .01 or .05 a piece. I figured my time was worth a little more.

9. Paul over at Cent$ible Tips not only shares his online money making experience, but also some helpful tips. Here's an excerpt from his entry:

Having lost a lot of money in ready-made, turn-key business opportunities, by the time I started online I was much more interested in self-run ideas. By far, my most successful has been an online store that cost less than $40 to set up (after years of trial and error, though!).

Making Money Online by Blogging

Are You Using Your Blog to Earn an Income?

My thoughts are that if you are wanting to make money blogging, you have to find your niche and then focus on that. Get affiliate links related to your niche and then just start blogging away. Traffic to your site will come once you start getting your blog out there (either through pinging, entering your blog in blog directories, through word of mouth or email, etc.). Although this won't happen over night, once your blog is "out there" you will start to get regular visitors who will then either buy the products you are selling, click on your Google Ads, sign up under your affiliate links, etc. That's how I'm making money.

It's not a lot YET, but I have a really good feeling about this. I just started the beginning of March and I am now getting at least a few clicks a week Adsense wise. I've sold an e-book and I have a few referrals in my Instant Profitz downline that I know I got because of my blog.

Making money blogging is slow going, but once you're on a roll, just looking at things from other people's experiences, I see this as great potential to earn an income online.

Not only that, but blogging for cash is good experience too.

Get Paid to Write

Do you get paid to blog?

Are you interested in other ways to make money online? Are you tired of completing surveys for cash or signing up for offers, free or otherwise? Then you are ready to think about the following venture:

Spam in Your Inbox and What to do About It

A Common "Get Paid To Sign Up" Issue

Is your email inbox just absolutely stuffed everyday because of everything you sign up for?

It doesn't have to be. You can make a free account for each company you sign up for using Yahoo or Hotmail or any other free service. Yes, you get a lot of spam mail when working with "get paid to" companies, but free email services can control what goes into your Inbox and what goes into your "Spam" box, I call it.

For example, if you decided to sign up for different survey companies, you can get an email address just for giving your opinions - something like xxxxopinionemail@yahoo.com where "xxxx" is replaced with your nickname. When you sign up for any survey company to get paid to give your opinion, you can use this "free" email address. After that you simply tell Yahoo what you want to accept in your inbox. Everything else will go to the "other" box.

Don't forget to use a different password for everything you sign up for and keep good records for tax time.
